Still seething about the terrible experience my children endured, and thinking about it again as the time for summer camp registration approaches. This overnight camp was nothing like what they claim. My sons experienced no option for high ropes. No option for canoeing. Counselors did not tell campers that pants were required for horse riding, so he couldn't do that either because he had shorts on. No nature walks, talks, or exploration. My 10-year-old had three different counselors over 5 days; no one knew his name and not surprisingly, he didn't know theirs. No effort to create a welcoming or comforting environment, even for younger or first time campers. Mail that I posted a week in advance was never delivered to my kids. A counselor borrowed my son's lamp and did not return it when asked at the end of camp, and it was not in the lost and found. The counselor for 13-year-olds did not require or even encourage campers to participate in activities. Instead, they just wanted to play basketball all week, so we paid almost $1000 for my son to sit on the ground next to a basketball court and read books while most other boys in his group played basketball everyday. In an after camp survey, they ask about new experiences with people different from themselves -- something I'm in favor of generally. However, my sons' experience of interacting with someone different was primarily having to deal with a bunch of obnoxious bullies who harassed each other and a poor snake, and dumped water on most other campers on the last night. The fireside stories on one night were okay -- that's literally the best we can say! This camp ruined my children for ever doing another overnight camp again. Avoid!

I was there for 2 weeks back in summer of 1962! What a great experience! Stayed in real log cabins!! Learned how to swim there! Learned how to horse back ride. Had great evening shows put on by the counselors! Learned how to start a fire with sticks! Fork law of Jacamo was a scary ! Clay hill was amazing!

When both of my daughters went to Hiram House for 6th grade camp back in the early 2000s both loved it.

I stayed here for a week twice when I was younger (42 now) and my son is 7. I thought about maybe sending him here for a week to see how he'd like it until I saw their web page about D.E.I and they have a whole section saying they'll let boys sleep in the girls cabin if they identify as female and all that. The. I remembered how they used to make us lean against the wall and sit the position of a chair until our legs gave out. I also remembered calling my mother the 2nd time I was there and begging her to come pick me up. Why? I don't know and I'm sure I'm blocking it out. Do not send your kids here. Would you want your daughter changing and showering one stall over from a male just because he wants to be a female?
