DMV Checklist (2026)

Ohio law requires new residents to obtain an Ohio driver's license and register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. Note: Ohio calls it the BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles), not the DMV.

Visit any Ohio BMV location (there are several in the Cleveland area). Bring: your current out-of-state license, proof of Social Security number (SSN card, W-2, or pay stub with full SSN), proof of Ohio residency (utility bill, bank statement, or lease in your name), and proof of legal presence (birth certificate or passport). The fee is approximately $25.75 for a standard 4-year license. No written or driving test is required when transferring from another state if your license is current.

Bring: your current out-of-state title or registration, proof of Ohio insurance, your new Ohio driver's license, and a VIN inspection form (some counties require this). Cuyahoga County requires an E-Check emissions test for vehicles 4-25 model years old before registration. Find an E-Check station at echeck.ohio.gov. Registration fees vary by county but are typically $30-60 plus county permissive taxes.

Ohio minimum requirements: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Ohio insurance rates are below the national average. Get quotes from major carriers; Progressive (headquartered in Cleveland) is competitive locally.
